Hospital Universitario Sanitas Virgen del Mar Renews Its Joint Commission International Accreditation
The Hospital Universitario Sanitas Virgen del Mar has once again obtained accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI), one of the most prestigious global recognitions in patient safety and healthcare quality. The renewal of this distinction confirms that the center continues to meet the highest international standards in clinical care.
In Spain, only around twenty hospitals hold this accreditation, including four belonging to Sanitas: La Zarzuela, La Moraleja, and Virgen del Mar in Madrid, and CIMA in Barcelona. This reinforces Sanitas’ position as one of the hospital groups with the largest number of JCI-certified centers in the country.
The evaluation by JCI highlights the Hospital Virgen del Mar as a benchmark in both clinical and organizational quality. The audit reviews key areas such as patient safety, coordination between care teams, continuity of care, safe medication management, and the presence of clear protocols for urgent care.
This seal has become a distinguishing element for patients, helping them identify hospitals operating under the highest standards of quality and safety. The renewal of the accreditation at Hospital Sanitas Virgen del Mar demonstrates the strength of its teams and processes, and reinforces Sanitas’ commitment to excellent, safe, and continuously improving healthcare,” stated Susana Quintanilla, General Director of Sanitas Hospitals.
To issue its decision, a team of international evaluators carried out an in-depth review of the center based on a checklist of more than 1,200 quality and safety indicators, ensuring that clinical practice, protocols, and continuous improvement systems meet the requirements established by JCI.
The accreditation is reviewed periodically to ensure that certified centers maintain their level of excellence over time. In this context, the renewal achieved by Hospital Sanitas Virgen del Mar provides further momentum to Sanitas’ management model, which is based on innovation, ongoing evaluation of outcomes, and the incorporation of digital tools that support clinical decision-making and the organization of care activity.
